Microneedling - what is it and why is the treatment so popular?

Microneedling is a non-surgical treatment that can help improve skin texture and reduce the visibility of scars and fine lines. In this blog post we will go through what microneedling is, how it works, and why it may be worth considering for you and your skin journey.
What is microneedling?
First you may be wondering, what exactly is microneedling? Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a non-surgical treatment that involves the use of a type of pen with many micro-thin needles that create small, controlled microscopic holes in the surface of the skin. In other words, we create small traumas in the skin, on purpose. This stimulates the body's natural healing process and promotes the production of collagen and elastin - two important components that give the skin its firmness and elasticity.
How does it work?
The procedure is performed by a skincare specialist or medical professional, whom you will find in our clinic. First the skin is cleansed with a cleanser and a degreasing solution to prep the skin thoroughly. The microneedling pen is then passed over the skin, and the needles create small channels in the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) and down into the dermis (the deeper layer). This process triggers a controlled injury that activates the skin's natural regeneration process. In other words, the skin starts to repair itself.
In response, the body begins to produce more collagen and elastin to repair the small holes. This results in improved skin texture, a more even skin tone, and a reduction in scars, fine lines and pores. In addition, collagen production in the skin can increase, which may give a more even skin structure.
Benefits of microneedling:
Reduced scars and scar tissue: Microneedling has been shown to be effective in reducing the visibility of various scars, as it creates new trauma in the scar so that it heals anew.
Improved skin texture: The treatment can give smoother skin by smoothing out unevenness and roughness.
Renewal of skin tone: Microneedling can help reduce pigmentation and contribute to a more even skin tone.
Reduced fine lines: By stimulating collagen production, microneedling can help reduce signs of ageing.
Better absorption of skincare products: The microchannels formed during the treatment increase the skin's ability to absorb active ingredients from skincare products.
Aftercare and results:
After microneedling the skin may feel a little red and irritated, similar to sunburn. This is a natural reaction and will subside within a few days. Most people also experience an immediate "glow" right after the treatment. To achieve the best results, several treatments a few weeks apart are usually recommended. Results can vary, but many see improvements after just a few sessions. How many rounds of treatment you need depends on the desired result and the starting point we are working with.
Microneedling has truly established itself as a popular and effective treatment in skin renewal. Remember to consult an expert before you decide, so that you can benefit from the best results for your unique skin type and needs. We offer a free consultation with a cosmetic nurse, who will give you plenty of good information so that together we can find out whether the treatment is suitable for your skin.
