Retinol – An indispensable skincare ingredient

Why should retinol be part of your skincare routine?

Retinol is an ingredient that has received a lot of attention in recent years, and not without reason. Perhaps you have already heard about the benefits of retinol, or perhaps this is something completely new to you. Either way, let's take a closer look at why retinol has become a favourite in many skincare routines and what wonderful benefits it can give your skin.

What is retinol?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A and is known for its powerful antioxidant properties. One of the most remarkable effects of retinol is its exfoliating action. By removing old, dead skin cells, retinol makes way for new, fresher cells to come to the surface. This can give the skin a more even appearance. In addition, retinol stimulates the production of elastin and collagen – important proteins that keep the skin firm and elastic. This is particularly important as we lose roughly 1% of our collagen every year from the age of 25, which in the long run can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. By including retinol in the skincare routine, you can contribute to a smoother skin structure.

Who should use retinol?

Retinol is a very versatile ingredient that suits both younger and older skin. If you want to prevent fine lines and wrinkles, it can be wise to start with retinol as early as your 20s. For people over 30, retinol can be particularly useful for reducing visible signs of ageing, such as lines and wrinkles. It is important to note that retinol is not a "quick fix" for immediate wrinkle removal, but can help slow the development of lines over time.

How to use retinol?

Retinol is a potent ingredient that can make the skin dry, sensitive and flaky, especially at the beginning. This is completely normal, and it can be wise to start by using retinol only 2–3 times a week. Gradually you can increase use as your skin becomes more tolerant. Preferably use retinol in the evening, as it can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Remember to wear sunscreen during the day to protect the skin from UV rays. If you experience dryness, a moisturising cream can help soothe and add extra moisture.

Patience is key

The effects of retinol can take time to show, and it may take a few weeks before you see noticeable results. Be patient, and give your skin time to adapt. Results vary from person to person and come gradually.
