Sun protection all year round!

Sun protection all year round!

Have you ever wondered why you actually need sunscreen when the sun "doesn't feel strong" or doesn't make you sunburnt? You are far from alone.

Many people are surprised when we recommend sunscreen all year round – but this is actually one of the most important routines you can have for your skin. Even if it is overcast and grey outside, and you can't feel the warm rays of the sun, that doesn't mean the UV rays are gone. They pass easily through both clouds and thin water droplets in the atmosphere.

UV radiation is one of the skin's biggest external influences, and over time can contribute to premature ageing, oxidative stress, pigmentation, uneven skin tone and, in the worst case, skin cancer. And even though UV radiation is strongest on sunny summer days, it is still present throughout the year – also in the winter months. As long as it is light outside, UV rays are part of the environment your skin is exposed to.

Today sunscreen comes in many different textures and formulations, adapted to different skin types and needs. Many still associate sunscreen with a heavy, greasy and white film on the skin – but that is far from the reality of modern products. A good sunscreen should feel comfortable, be light in consistency and fit into your daily skincare routine.

Some people also feel that sunscreen can contribute to spots or congested skin, but this is often down to the wrong type of product. There are many light, non-comedogenic sunscreens that do not affect sebum production or clog pores.

What many also forget is that the skin is exposed to more than just sunlight. HEV light (blue light) and infrared radiation also affect our skin, and we are exposed to this daily through screens, mobile phones, TV and other digital surfaces. That is why it is important to have a sunscreen that protects broadly – not only against UVA and UVB, but also against HEV light and IR-A. All of our sunscreens are developed with exactly this in mind.

Also remember that the amount and application are everything for protection. A good rule of thumb is two finger-lengths of sunscreen for the face and neck to achieve the right level of protection. Sunscreen should also be reapplied regularly throughout the day, especially when outdoors, sweating or in contact with water, to maintain its effect.
